Prize in a hunt for "the Holy Grail"

The Time Monk Presents

For the second time in a year, the publisher Bloomsbury is switching the cover of a book because of public outcry about featuring a white model on the cover of a novel about a black or mixed-race protagonist. This time the book is Jaclyn Dolamore's Magic Under Glass. Bloomsbury's Web site says, "Bloomsbury is ceasing to supply copies of the US edition of Magic Under Glass. The jacket design has caused offense and we apologize for our mistake. Copies of the book with a new jacket design will be available shortly."

It is sad to think marketers might still believe that a cover with a white model would sell better than one with a black model. Do you think this was an intentional decision or carelessness on the part of the publisher?

For more information, Entertainment Weekly has a good run down of the full story.
