Pirate Latitudes by Michael Crichton was found as a manuscript among his belongings after his untimely death. It is a pirate yarn in the tradition of Treasure Island. While not "typical Crichton," it is a good story that shows his skill as a writer.

Pirate Latitudes by Michael Crichton

Julie Powell's first book, Julie and Julia: My Year of Cooking Dangerously, recounted the year she decided to cook every recipe in Julia Child's Mastering the Art of French Cooking. It was turned into a popular movie with a romantic comedy tone earlier this year. On the heels of the movie and just in time for the holidays, Powell is releasing another memoir: Cleaving: A Story of Marriage, Meat and Obsession. In her latest book, she is very candid about extramarital affairs that she and her husband both committed after she wrote Julie and Julia. Powell decides to leave the city and work at a butcher, immersing herself in the hard physical labor of chopping meat in order to distract herself from their failing marriage. Do you think Cleaving will be too heavy for the Julie and Julia crowd, or will it have the appeal that Elizabeth Gilbert's honesty in Eat, Pray, Love produced?
